How to care for your high chair properly

Now that you've invested in a high chair, you'll want to learn how to properly care for it. Cleaning and caring for your high chair not only keeps it looking like new, but also ensures it lasts as long as you need it.

Everyday care

Obviously, your child's high chair will require some cleaning after each meal. While the amount of cleaning required depends on the mess your child makes, most likely you will need to wipe down the high chair's arms and tray with warm soapy water. If the high chair's seat is made of vinyl or a similar material, you also can wipe it down with a damp cloth. For seats made of other materials, you may need to brush or shake loose any crumbs or particles.

A thorough cleaning

Sometimes food gets splattered in unlikely places that go unnoticed during everyday cleanings. Periodically, the high chair should be thoroughly cleaned. In addition to the care steps listed above, you should do the following:

• Remove the high chair's seat cushion. If possible, remove the seat cushion from your high chair. This will allow you to remove any crumbs or small food particles that may have been overlooked. To get into the nooks and crannies of the high chair, try using a small handheld brush or even a vacuum.
• Clean the frame. Use a mild detergent to wipe down the entire frame of the high chair. Make sure to wipe underneath the seat as well as the backside.
• Thoroughly wash the seat cushion. The seat cushion of the high chair will need to be washed well about once a week. How you do this depends mostly on the material. If your high chair has a seat cushion that is made of a machine-washable fabric, you can simply throw it in the washer. For vinyl or similar materials, you'll have to do it by hand. To make it easier, try letting it soak in warm, soapy water and then air-dry.
